Orange Village History: Originally part Of Orange Twp., formed in 1820, which also included the modem communities of Moreland Hills, Woodmere, Pepper Pike, Hunting Valley, and part of Chagrin Falls. Serenus Bumett was the first settler in the township, arriving in 1815.

The name Orange was chosen because several of the early settlers had migrated from Orange, CT. The area grew into a thriving agricultural community, and by 1820 the population was nearly 300. Before 1850, log houses were replaced by framed homes, and steam sawmills and cheese factories were early industries that developed into major businesses by the turn of the century. The main road was SOM Center Rd., which derived its name from Solon, Orange, and Mayfield as it ran through the centers of those townships.

The Van Sweringen brothers played an instrumental role in the division of Orange Twp. into separate governmental bodies in the 1920s. They began buying farmland
as part of their comprehensive plan to develop the entire district from Shaker Heights
to the Chagrin River. As population increased, the apparent need for separate governmental representation led to the creation of the various communities.

The village of Orange was incorporated in 1929. Although the original Orange Twp. now consists of five separate villages, local district schools were consolidated into the Orange School System. The Orange Branch of the Cuyahoga County Public Library System serves Solon, Pepper Pike, and their neighbors. The village of Orange had a population of 2,376 in 1980 and operates under the mayor-council form of government.
